History:
Since Town & Country Christian Church began September 8, 1963, God has greatly blessed our presence in the Topeka community. The congregation started with 24 people, representing eight families, who met in the basement of the Kaw Valley Electric Cooperative building at 5700 West 21st Street. Over forty years later, one family of the original eight remain in our congregation — the Duane and Miriam Long family. The new church ordained their first minister, Henry Penner, in 1964, and in May, 1965, started construction on a new church building at the present location, 4925 West 29th Street.
The first building, completed in September 1965, consisted of a sanctuary that seated 150. Two ministers - Everett Thompson and Sherman Sack - served the congregation until, under the leadership of Larry Kuhl who served as pastor from 1974 through 1980, a south wing was added to the original building, providing additional classrooms and a fellowship hall. The congregation also acquired a house and land to the east of the building for future expansion.
In December, 1980, Richard Sutherlin was called as pastor, and, in 1985, Dale Greer arrived to serve as the youth pastor for the church. Also in 1985, the current sanctuary, which seats 560, was built, including the nursery, classrooms and choir room. The old sanctuary was remodeled into the church offices, workroom, library and restrooms.
In 1992, Rick Lowry came to T&CCC as Senior Minister, and he and Richard Sutherlin shared this position for a year, followed by Richard's transition to his current position as Pastoral Minister. After an absence of a few years, Dale Greer returned to Town & Country as our Youth Minister. During this time, the current educational wing, including the gym, classrooms, and the new church offices, was completed in 1996. As in the past, many members of the church participated in building the new addition. This addition has allowed our outreach to the community to greatly expand, with many community groups meeting in our building throughout the week. The gym, especially, has been greatly appreciated as a multi-purpose facility, used fro everything from wedding receptions to Wednesday Night Suppers to monthly youth services.
Dale Greer moved into his current position as Senior Minister in 2000, with David Logsdon joining the staff as Youth Minister in 2001.
In accordance with our mission statement, which reads, "Town & Country Christian Church exists to glorify God," we as a congregation strive to keep God at the forefront of everything we do. To Him be the glory for ever and ever!
